If there’s one word that is often used to describe the numerous Megaman series, I’d say it would be “eternal”. For the Battle Network series, this is not the case. The sixth and final game of the series continues the series’ trend of two differing versions and continues to bring the games’ standard gameplay back again, with some new features to keep things interesting.

In this game, there’s a huge shake-up in terms of storyline. Lan and Megaman.EXE are moving from their hometown of ACDC Town to a brand new city, known as Cyber City, because his father has taken a job as an administrator at the Cyber City Expo - an important event related to the future of technology. The new change of scenery brings along new friends, such as Mr. Mach, Lan’s homeroom teacher at Cyber Academy; Mick, a tough guy who fills Dex’s role as Lan’s main rival; Tab, a student who works at his family’s chip shop; and the mysterious Iris. Of course, as usual, there are also new enemies, such as Captain Blackbeard, a deranged animal trainer who was fired from the Seaside Town’s Aquarium and his nautical navi, Diveman; the hideous Vic, and his multi-talented navi, Elementman; not to mention their mysterious leaders. This new group has a plan that spells doom for the internet, reviving the two Cybeasts of legend, Gregar and Falzar. They manage to capture one of the Cybeasts, while the other is absorbed by Megaman. However, despite this setback, the organization, known as the WWW, tries anything in its power to steal the power of the Cybeast from Megaman. Can Lan and Megaman stop this new threat and save the world, for a sixth time?

The gameplay is similar to that of previous Battle Network games, with a few new additions. Essentially, you play as two characters for the most part: Lan in the real world and Megaman in the cyber world. You go through most of the action as Megaman, blasting viruses and enemy Navis in order to save the world from destruction. However, you also need to solve puzzles as Lan to help Megaman in his quest.

Soul Unisons return, under the new name, “Cross Change System”. However in MMBN6, there are a few changes made to the system. You no longer need to sacrifice a chip to summon the Cross, and the Crosses last as long as you want with no turn limits. Also, the Navi Customizer returns, same as always, allowing you to add various abilities to Megaman, such as additional health, additional power, charge speed and charge levels for your Mega Buster, and many other abilities.

T here are also some new elements in the gameplay, the most important being the “Beast Out” system. Early in the game, Megaman gains the power of one of the Cybeasts (either Gregar or Falzar, depending on whichever version of the game you’re currently playing), which makes him extremely powerful and plays a great role in the storyline. Essentially, on the Custom screen, next to the “OK” button that ends your turn, there’s a button that activates your Beast form. As you can see in your “Emotion Window” (that little bar with Megaman’s eyes in it with the number beside it), activating your Beast Form decreases the number by one. Every time you use the custom window (or use a turn), the number decreases, until it reaches zero. When it finally hits zero, Megaman reverts to normal, although he’s now in his tired status, which prevents him from entering Full Synchro mode. If you Beast Out while tired, you enter the “Beast Over” mode. In Beast Over, you lose control of Megaman as the Cybeast fully takes him over. The only say you have in his actions is the chips he can use. Once that turn is up, Megaman goes into a “Very Tired” status, which prevents him from Beasting Out, using the Cross Change, leaves any Buster attack (charged or not) at minimal damage, and slowly, your HP decreases.

In order to regain turns to use the Beast Out, you must go through a battle without using it at all. Each battle you go through without Beasting Out gives you a turn, and you can only hold a maximum of three. You can also combine Cross Changes with the Beast Out to form the Powerful “Beast Cross”. Also, if you Beast Out during a turn, you can’t Cross Change until your next turn, and vice-versa. Another addition, which is more of an adaption of the Team system from the previous game, is the “Link Navi” system. Essentially, you can control 5 other navis, each with their own special abilities, powers and weaknesses. The selection of navis varies between the two versions: Gregar lets you play as Heatman, Elecman, Chargeman, Eraseman and Slashman; while Falzar puts you in control of Aquaman (or Spoutman, as Capcom of America has oddly renamed him), Tomahawkman, Tenguman, Groundman and Dustman. These navis are also the ones you can cross with, and the Link Navi system even plays a role in the game’s storyline.

The graphics in this game echo the gameplay: extremely derivative of the old games, but with a few subtle additions. The sound is the exact opposite: very few classic themes return, while most of the soundtrack is original. A lot of the songs are good, but still, they don’t live up to the quality of the classic and X series. A lot of sound effects return, though.

As for Replay, there are the usual side quests(various errands you can run for people, and the typical epilogue game) found in most of the MMBN games, a two-player battle mode, and that’s about it. No crossover with the Boktai games this time. If you’re a huge fan of the MMBN series, I’d say pick this one up to complete your collection. If you’ve never played the MMBN series, then you might want to pick this one up. If you didn’t like any of the prior MMBN games, then just ignore this release, it’s more of the same.

Gameplay

The same old fun gameplay shown in the earlier games with a few new twists. Still, a bit more innovation would have made this game better.

Graphics

Pretty much the same as the earlier games, though still quite impressive on the GBA.

Sound

The soundtrack is pretty good, but doesn’t live up to its heritage. Sound effects are pretty average though.

Replay Value

The usual stuff. Errands, epilogue, chip collecting, nothing new.
